Now feeling the quiet pleasure of finding writing that takes itself seriously without being self serious, and a stop at OldSchoolOpen extended that subtle pleasure, the gap between earnest and pretentious is fine and this site has clearly chosen to land on the earnest side without slipping over into pretentious which is impressive.

Found this really helpful, the explanations are simple but they actually answer the questions a normal reader would have, and after I followed thirtymale I had a clearer sense of the topic, no extra fluff just useful points laid out in a sensible order that made the time worth it.

So — have been messing about with this thing for about six months now and I keep coming back, so thought I’d say something since someone asked me a few days back. I’m UK based, mainly bet football and racing, a fiver here and there, for context.

What got me on it was actually pretty stupid — I never could work out what an ew return would be once you get five places instead of three. Basically I’d wing it and get a shock. Now type the odds in before every slip, even the boring singles.

The single bet calculator is the bit I’m on daily — type in the price and your stake and you get the return instantly, fractional or decimal, doesn’t matter. Same tool covers the bigger stuff — acca and treble returns, lucky 15s, a yankee, which is where most people I know mess it up. If you fancy a poke about, it’s here patent bet and there’s no login wall, which I appreciated.

One thing that really changed how I bet was the geekier bits. They’ve got an implied probability calculator which shows you what margin’s baked in, plus a kelly criterion tool — I stick to fractional kelly as the full version is far too aggressive. The dutching one is handy too when I’m splitting a race.

Not all sunshine though. The layout is a bit basic — no frills, it’s clearly function over form. On mobile it’s fine but the bigger tables need a bit of scrolling. And nothing on the app store, it’s a website and that’s it — slight shame just flagging it.

Anyway. Costs nowt, not plastered in adverts, does what it says. Anyone who honestly adds it up in their head, have a look — it’s saved me a load of “wait, that’s it?” moments.

Reading this triggered a small change in how I think about the topic going forward, and a stop at zylavocapital reinforced that subtle shift, the rare content that actually moves my thinking rather than just confirming or filling it is the kind I most value and this site is providing that kind of impact today.

Solid post, the structure is easy to follow and the language stays simple even when the topic gets a bit more involved, and a look at sega-live kept that same standard going, so I left feeling like the time spent here was actually worth something for once which is rare lately.

So — been on this thing for about four months now and I keep coming back, reckon I’d say something since a lad on another thread asked me the other day. I’m in the UK, mainly bet football and racing, nothing mad, for context.

How I found it was genuinely embarrassing — I never could work out what an each way payout actually was with 1/5 odds a place. Basically I’d wing it and get a shock. These days I type the odds in first, every time, even the boring singles.

Their single bet calculator is the part I use most — you put in your stake, the odds and it spits out profit and total return instantly, fractional or decimal, doesn’t matter. Same tool covers the bigger stuff — trebles returns, lucky 15 and lucky 63, a yankee, honestly that’s where most people I know mess it up. If you fancy a poke about, it’s here betting returns calculator and there’s no login wall, which I appreciated.

One thing that actually shifted things for me were the more serious tools. There’s an probability converter and it makes obvious the overround, and there’s the kelly staking calculator — I run quarter kelly since full stakes are terrifying. The dutch tool gets used a fair bit if I’m covering two or three runners.

Not all sunshine though. Its interface looks very functional, let’s say — zero polish, which honestly I don’t mind but some will. On my phone it works but the bigger tables are a squeeze. There’s nothing on the app store, it’s a website and that’s it — fine by me just flagging it.

So yeah. Doesn’t cost anything, not plastered in adverts, works. Anyone who still adds it up in their head, try it — saved me a load of arguments with the bookie.
